Having grown up on the North Shore in Highland Park, I was always aware and appreciative of this area's natural beauty. My earliest mentor and strongest influence in the fine arts was my mother, a true Renaissance woman. She was extraordinarily talented in all of the fine arts including oil painting, sculpting, ceramics, needlework, antiques and jewelry design. Her love and appreciation of good design was passed along to me with an incredible eye for detail. I was taught to see the beauty in all things and to understand that good design could be found in any object, anywhere and did not have to cost a fortune.
With this foundation firmly in place, I received a B.A. in Journalism with an emphasis in photography from the University of Iowa. Upon graduation, I lived in NYC for a couple of years working in the commercial photography field. When I returned to Chicago, I studied at the Harrington Institute of Interior Design where I received my degree in Interior Design. I worked as a design librarian for a prominent residential design firm; called on the architectural/design community as a sales rep for high-end furniture lines; and then began work as an Interior Designer at firms specializing in residential and commercial design.
My love for design and a desire to work for myself, led me to work independently for a number of years. It was during this time that Shani and I met, developed an amazing friendship and realized that we shared a similar design philosophy. We formed SHANI & JANE re-DESIGN with the understanding that our combined experience, talents and skills could help transform the way people live and function in their environments.
I was born on Chicago's North Shore and as a young girl I lived in a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Highland Park. I truly believe that living in that spectacular home sparked my love for interior design and helped me recognize the tremendous importance and impact that the environment has on each of us.
When my family moved from this architectural masterpiece to a two-bedroom apartment in Hyde Park, I once again experienced how the impact of my environment made such a difference in my day-to-day living. It was this early understanding and a strong desire to make my living spaces work that led me to where I am today.
My mother was an architect and my father was a pioneer rehabber in Chicago. Both were sculptors and painters. My awareness of design, textures and space was dramatically influenced by their perspectives and lifestyle.
I studied fine arts/art education at Columbia College with an emphasis in fiber and metal arts and interior design at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I have worked with a real estate developer rehabbing and managing Chicago properties and owned an interior design practice in Michigan and Chicago.
SHANI & JANE re-DESIGN utilizes my skills, talents and passion for good design, in order to make a difference in the quality of peoples' lives.
It's hard to believe that a chance meeting in a grocery store would evolve into a wonderful friendship and a successful business partnership, but it did. And, while it was fate that brought us together back in 1994, it was a shared passion for style, the arts and interior design that resulted in the launch of SHANI & JANE re-DESIGN twelve years later, in 2006. We are so fortunate to be doing something we love.
To us, there's nothing more rewarding than jumping right into a home re-design or staging project. With an eye for detail, extensive industry experience, a genuine interest in our clients' needs and exceptional interior design skills, we can transform a home or office using what our clients already have. Whether it's a single room, an entire house, or an office suite, our creative re-design approach results in a brand new space, at a fraction of the cost of traditional interior design.
